Potential new way to monitor blood glucose levels?

Researchers Experimenting With Near-Infrared Light To Monitor Blood Glucose Levels.
The Wall Street Journal (8/31, Wang) reports that researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are experimenting with near-infrared light beams as a way for patients with type 1 diabetes to test blood glucose levels without having to prick themselves for a drop of blood. While the technology is years away from practical applicability, graduate students there are experimenting on a device that may someday be worn around the wrist to monitor blood glucose levels continuously and that would eliminate the need for blood sticks. To date, however, the device is about as big as a shopping cart and has yet to be tested in trials.
