Applanation Tonometer
There are many ways to evaluate eye pressure, but applanation tonometry is the most accurate and the preferred method. The Goldman Applanation method allows interocular pressure (IOP) measurements to be taken with the patient at the slit lamp as part of a routine.
Applanation tonometry is based on the following principle: Measurement of the force necessary to flatten a corneal surface of constant (ø3.06mm)size. Using the slit lamp microscope at 10x magnification provides an exact measurement. This measurement is vital in the diagnosis and treatment of Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension.
