Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera suffered a small fracture in the bone under his right eye after getting hit by a hard grounder in a spring training game Monday.

Cabrera, who received eight stitches to close the bloody wound, told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney Tuesday that the team would re-evaluate him in a week, but he likely will be out at least a couple of weeks. Cabrera's vision is fine, according to the team.

"I was lucky," he told Olney.

Controlling MYOPIA

By Dr. Adam D. Mark - Posted on 22 February 2012

The ROMIO trial or Retardation of Myopia in Orthokeratology is a clinical trial that randomized children to orthokeratology (over night wear of special contact lenses) verses wearing glasses.

Even though the results aren't finalized and published its reported that the children that wore the over night contact lenses had a 43% reduction in axial elongation,.. which means reduced nearsightedness.

Again, while the official results aren't published this shows early evidence that over night wear of specialty contact lenses plays a role in myopia control.

Gilenya is a relatively new ORAL medication to treat MS. Gilenya treats the relapsing form of MS.
Patients should be aware that this medication can cause macula edema which causes vision symptoms very similar to as if you were having a MS attack(optic neuritis). Your vision should be checked by your eye doctor prior to starting the medication and then 3 months later!!

Electronic Eyeglasses Allow Users To Adjust Prescription.

The Los Angeles Times (10/13, Bailey) reports that electronic eyeglasses may be the solution for people who currently wear progressive lenses or bifocals. PixelOptics has developed "a new line of glasses that combine traditional lenses with transparent liquid crystals. A microprocessor makes the liquid crystals change the glasses' prescription, either automatically or on command, when activated by a tiny accelerometer or a finger touching a sensor on the earpiece."

The study found that participants experienced marked improvement in visual acuity and 3-D depth perception after spending just 40 hours playing off-the-shelf video games.

By Dr. Adam D. Mark - Posted on 19 August 2011

New Eyeglasses Change Focus Electronically.

On its website, KPHO-TV Phoenix, Arizona (8/19, Hoey), a CBS affiliate, reports that yesterday in Phoenix, eye doctors had the chance to take a look at "the world's first and only electronically-focusing prescription eyeglasses." Called EMPOWER, the special eyeglasses, created by Pixel Optics, change focus when the wearer touches his temple or tilts his head, thus activating "a layer of liquid crystals in each lens, instantly creating a near-focus zone." The new glasses are powered by a hidden battery that is fully rechargeable.
